Madison 5 Woodson 2
May 10th at Woodson
The Liberty District Champion Madison Warhawks made their trip to Woodson on Tuesday for the JV season finale. Finally, “baseball weather” made its appearance, as both teams had a chance to leave the cold weather gear in the locker room. Tyler Hetmanek made the start for the Warhawks, and delivered 5 innings of 1 run baseball to notch his 3rd win of the season. Captain Sam Gilbert picked up the save, throwing the 6th and 7th, and helping his own cause by starting a nifty 1-6-3 double play in the 6th to erase a Woodson threat. In the 7th, with the tying Woodson run at the plate and 2 men out, third baseman Andrew Schrock ranged deep behind third to make a diving catch of a pop foul, cementing the win for the Warhawks and a stellar 13-1 season.
The Warhawk bats were strangely silent, garnering only 4 hits in the contest. Seven free passes to the bases from the Woodson pitching staff, however, were enough to generate scoring chances; Woodson also had plenty of chances to score, but great Madison defense (3 double plays) kept them from plating more than 2 runs.
Kyle McIntyre went 1-3, Jesse Jeter had a big 2 RBI hit, and Mike Padgett also delivered a key hit and stole 4 bases in the game.
What a season for the JV Warhawks! Superb and deep pitching throughout, stellar defense, and potent bats gave the Madison boys a 13-1 regular season record. Madison outscored its opponents 157-24 for the season, and 8 of their wins came in shortened mercy rule contests.
