WARHAWKS NEWS AND NOTES

Tonight’s Game: The Warhawks enter on a seven-game winning streak and fresh off winning their fourth Liberty District Tournament title in five years. The Spartans are coming off a 4-3 loss in the Patriot District semifinals to Lake Braddock last Friday night. Junior LHP Jason Farley, who enters with an 8-1 record this season, will start on the mound for Madison tonight.

Last Time Out: Behind a 3-for-3 night from senior CF Mark Riffee and a gritty effort by sophomore RHP Jesse Jeter, Madison defeated Stone Bridge, 6-3, in the Liberty District final at South Lakes on Monday night.

Region Honors: Farley was named the Northern Region’s player of the year, and was joined on the region’s first-team by senior Riffee. Senior 2B Joey Hayes and junior 1B Arman Moniri were second-team selections.

District Honors: Madison had 13 players earn all-Liberty District honors and Mark “Pudge” Gjormand was named the coach of the year. Riffee, Farley, Hayes and Moniri each earned first-team honors. Senior RF Josh Carter, junior LF Sterling Sams, junior 3B Brian Smith, junior SS Rich Conlon, junior RHP Sam Gilbert and sophomore RHP Jesse Jeter earned second-team honors. Junior C Alex Andrews, senior pitcher Kevin Ashcraft and sophomore Brig Tison  were selected honorable mention.

All-Met: Riffee and Farley each were named first-team All-Met selections by The Washington Post earlier this week. Madison now has had nine players earn first- or second-team All-Met honors since the 2001 season.

Rankings: Madison enters the game ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press’s state poll, No. 2 in the D.C. Examiner Northern Virginia poll, No. 3 in The Washington Post metro poll, No. 18 in the Student Sports national poll and No. 20 in the USAToday national poll.

Protect This House: The Warhawks enter having won each of their eight home games this season. Madison is 7-1 on the road and 6-0 at neutral sites on the year.

Stingy Defense: Madison has allowed just 44 runs (2.0 per game) this season. The Warhawks have shutout nine opponents and at one point did not allow a run over a span of 34 innings while posting four straight shutouts.

Dominant Decade: Madison has compiled the best record of any Northern Region school this decade, going 136-34 (.800) since 2000 with four Liberty District titles.

MARK “PUDGE” GJORMAND

Mark “Pudge” Gjormand took over the Madison High School baseball program in 1996, and has since won Liberty District regular season or tournament championships in seven of his 11 seasons while also winning two Northern Region championships and one Group AAA state title. He enters today’s game with a 185-71 (.723) career record at the school.

MADISON BASEBALL HISTORY

Madison’s baseball program has won 17 district championships, six regional championships and three Group AAA state championships since the school fielded its first varsity team in 1959. The Warhawks won four straight region titles from 1967-71, winning state titles in 1968 and 1971. A few generations later, Madison won back-to-back region titles in 2002-03, winning the state title with a 29-0 record in 2002.
