The Vienna Mustangs played the summer of 2005 in the Old Dominion League and played in the CABA 18U World Series in Miami, Florida. The Mustangs were primarily comprised of players from the Madison Warhawks and Oakton Cougars and were led by Oakton Coaches Scott Rowland and Don Kildoo. Harvard baseball player and former Warhawk, Matt Riffee also helped coach while rehabilitating from shoulder surgery this summer. The Mustangs compiled a 21-9 record this season including a 5-2 record in the CABA World Series. The Mustangs won their pool in the CABA tournament and advanced to the World Series Championship bracket finishing 5-2. Mark Riffee was named to the CABA All-World Series First Team by hitting .475 and pitching 2-0 record with a 0.000 ERA. Curtis Eward won the tournaments Hustle Award for his hard-nosed play and hitting.

 

Below are game summaries from the CABA World Series Tournament in Miami, Florida:


CABA 18U  World Series Miami, Florida

Game 1  Vienna Mustangs 8 vs. Miami Rangers 3
The Mustangs took a 4 run lead and then surrendered 3 unearned runs by
committing 4 errors to let Miami back in the game. The Mustangs pulled away
to win 8-3.

Mark Riffee pitched and recorded the win. He pitched six innings
surrendering no earned runs and walking no one on 65 pitches. Brian Eck
pitched the seventh inning for the save. Curtis Eward was 2 for 3 with a
three-run home run and 2 RBIs. Mark Riffee was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Evan
Frederickson had an RBI single. Preston Madden, Rich Conlon and Joe Canova
added hits in the win.



Game 2 Vienna Mustangs 8 vs. Pinstripe Baseball 2

The Mustangs took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, scored again in the
fourth inning to lead 4-1 and added 4 more runs in the seventh inning for
an 8-2 win.

Jason Farley pitched and recorded the win. He pitched 5 innings allowing 2
runs on 4 hits. Jason struck out 5, walked 2 and hit one batter on 73
pitches. Colin Michael pitched the final two innings for the save. Colin
allowed no runs or hits and struck out one batter for the save on 19
pitches. Bryan Kidwell was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs, Arman Moniri was 2 for 3
and was hit by a pitch, Preston Madden had an RBI double and Joey Hayes had
2 hits and an RBI- all as highlights of our offense.



Game 3 Vienna Mustangs 8 vs. Team Florida (Miami) 0

The Mustangs took a four run lead in the third and added four more in the bottom
of the fourth to win by the slaughter rule. Josh Carter's walk-off bases
loaded single ended the game. The Mustangs clinched their pool with this
win.

Evan Frederickson pitched all five innings for the win. Evan allowed no
runs on one hit, striking out 9 batters while walking 4 batters on 95
pitches. Mark Riffee was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored; Evan
Frederickson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored; Zac Caito was 2
for 3 with a double an RBI and a run scored: Josh Carter was 2 for 3 and a
run scored; Alex Andrews was 1 for 1 with a walk; and Curtis Eward was 1
for 3 with a run scored.


Game 4 Vienna Mustangs 8 vs. South Carolina Scorpions 0

The Mustangs won another game by the slaughter rule in walk-off fashion to
go undefeated in CABA pool play and Advance to the World Series Bracket.

Bryan Kidwell pitched three innings and recorded the win. Bryan allowed no
runs on 1 hit, striking out 2 and walking 2 on 43 pitches. Colin Michael
recorded the save allowing no runs on 3 hits in two innings with 32
pitches. Bryan Eck was 2 for 2 with a double, run scored and walk-off RBI
single to end the game; Curtis Eward was 2 for 3, Arman Moniri, Joey Hayes
and Joe Canova each had one hit and Mark Riffee added 2 RBIs in the win.





Game 5, First Game in CABA World Series Championship Bracket

Vienna Mustangs 9 vs. Kansas City Panthers 0


The Mustangs defeated a team that was 3-1 in pool play by the slaughter
rule 9-0.

Mark Riffee pitched on two days rest and recorded the win. Mark allowed no
runs on two hits with 4 strikeouts in 4 innings of work on 50 pitches.
Andrew Eck pitched a scoreless fifth inning allowing no runs or hits and
striking out 1 batter. Curtis Eward was hit by a pitch in the face and missed the rest of the tournament.

Offensively Mark Riffee was 3 for 3 with an RBI, Bryan Kidwell was 2 for 3
with an RBI, and Zac Caito was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Rich
Conlon had a sacrifice fly RBI.  Defensively,  the Mustangs converted two Joey Hayes-to-Rich Conlon-to-Evan Frederickson double plays, Joe Canova made a nice catch
in centerfield and Mark Riffee picked a runner off.

 

Game 6, Second Game in CABA World Series Championship Bracket

Tennessee Hit-After-Hit Academy 6  vs. Vienna Mustangs 1


The Mustangs had a tough loss to a very good Tennessee team.
Tennessee scored 3 in the first and the Mustangs scored 1 and had bases
loaded but lost 2 runners on a double play on a well hit ball. The Mustangs only had
5 hits but had  lots of base runners due to walks. The Mustangs ran into two double plays on hits to the outfield and lost opportunities by
making mistakes throughout the game.

Jason Farley pitched on two days rest. He pitched 4 and one third
innings allowing 5 earned runs (2 were left on base and scored after he
left the mound) with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Andrew Eck pitched an inning
and two thirds and Brian Eck closed out the seventh on the hill.

Offensively the Mustangs only had 5 hits but many of their hitters saw few good pitches and drew walks. Mark Riffee was 1 for 2, with 2 walks with a run scored. Bryan Kidwell was 1 for 3, with a
walk. Evan Frederickson was 1 for 3 with a walk. Jason Farley was 1 for 2.
Brian Eck was 1 for 3 with a double.

 

Game 7, Third Game CABA World Series Championship Bracket

Florida Columbus Explorers 2 vs. Vienna Mustangs 0


The Mustangs played another good team and could not get the offensive
breakthrough needed to advance in the World Series. The game was basically
a pitching and defensive contest with the Mustangs actually out-hitting
Columbus 5 to 4 and the Mustangs had more base runners, however, Columbus
delivered the big hit and the Mustangs stranded runners in scoring position
three times.

Brian Kidwell pitched well today allowing only two earned runs on 4 hits
over 6.1 innings. Brian struck out 5 and walked only one batter on 88
pitches but took the loss as we failed to score. Brian Eck shut down a
Columbus threat in the seventh getting the final two outs. Offensively,
Preston Madden was 2 for 3, while Mark Riffee, Alex Andrews and Zac Caito
had the other hits. 

The Mustangs concluded the CABA 18U World Series with a 5-2 record and
their summer season with a 21-9 record. For the tourney the team hit .321and
outscored their opponents 37 to 13.

 Mark Riffee was named to the CABA All-World Series  First Team, hitting .475 and pitching 2-0 record with a 0.000 ERA. Curtis Eward won the World Series Hustle Award for his hard-nosed play and hitting prowess.
