Coach Gjormand on Andrew: "Andrew Baird is a very talented player, who plays the game the way it's supposed to be played; hard, smart, enthusiastic and with a passion to win that can not be matched by most high school players.  A team can not do what we did in 2002 without a player like Andrew.  He sets the tone and brings it to the yard every day.  Every day is game day with this kid.  Andrews brings great athletic ability, power and a strong arm to centerfield for his third year as a starter for us.  He has done a wonderful job helping to lead a young team with lots of talent in the right direction.  He will be a great prize for whatever college he chooses and has a long successful career ahead of him."

Mark began playing baseball in Colleyville, Texas.  He played Vienna Little League for the Dodgers and was a key player on their Championship teams and was a four year all-star.  Mark played   two years  for the Vienna Mustangs as their LHP ace, centerfielder and captain.  Mark helped lead the Mustangs into the Nationals through the Super Regionals and then to a sixth place finish in the AAU National Championships last summer by pitching two complete game three-hit shut outs for 1 to 0 wins.  Mark joins the Madison Warhawks as a freshman LHP and outfielder.  He served as a volunteer manager for last year's State Champion Warhawks before joining Madison.

Mark's thoughts on the Season: "This team is persistent and will get where it wants to be because of it."

Coach Gjormand on Mark: "Mark is a very talented player with a huge upside for the future.  He has made an immediate impression with our entire coaching staff.  As a left-handed freshman, he will help us get people out on the mound and in the outfield.  His great attitude and work ethic have him now making an impact with his bat."

Mark "Pudge" Gjormand

Coach Gjormand is entering his eighth season at the helm of the Madison Warhawks following the most successful season in school and State History as the Warhawks won James Madison High School's third State Baseball Championship with a perfect record of 29-0. The Warhawks were ranked third nationally by ESPN and Student Sports and fourth nationally by USA Today. Gjormand along with his team won numerous awards including: Coach of the Year for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Liberty District Coach of the Year, Northern Region Coach of the Year (by coaches and Fairfax Journal) and BCA East Coast Coach of the Year ( award sponsored by Baseball America) and Finalist for BCA National Coach of the Year. The BCA awards were presented at the National Conference in St. Louis.  The Home Plate Club recognized the Warhawks as Team of the Year and Coach Gjormand as Coach of the Year.

Prior to coming to Madison, Mark served as Varsity Assistant Baseball coach for nine seasons at Marshall High School, where he also served as assistant basketball coach (two years) and assistant football coach (six years) including three years as offensive coordinator. He worked for the Central Intelligence Agency between 1985-1992 and left the CIA to work at Marshall High School as a Health Awareness Assistant.  He now holds the position of Safety and Security Assistant at Madison working under Mike Manes.  During the summer months, Coach Gjormand serves as the Director of Greater Vienna Sports Camps which he started eight years ago with Mike Skinner, a teacher and Head Football Coach at Centreville High School.  Along with the Town of Vienna Parks and Recreation Department, Coach Gjormand offers a variety of sports camps for kids of all ages in the Fairfax County area.  His hobbies include listening to Jimmy Buffet while sitting on any beautiful beach, where there's warm weather and a great tanning index.  During his down time, Mark likes to play golf at the many fine courses in our area.  He resides in Herndon with wife Beth, a 1987 Madison graduate and the Head Trainer at Flint Hill School in Oakton.  The Gjormand's have two children, daughter Samantha and son Josh Thomas.

Greg Brown

Assistant Coach Outfielders

Coach Greg Brown returns to the Warhawks as the Outfield Coach.  His first year with the Warhawks was quite successful as he further developed the talents of all-star players Alan Wimmer, Andrew Baird and Joe Lewin.  Greg is developing a young but talented group of outfielders to complement the veteran Baird as the Warhawks aim to fly high again.  Coach Brown grew up in Centreville and played baseball for Chantilly High School for four years.  He has served in prior years as Head Coach for the American Legion Post 177 baseball team.  He currently owns and manages Emerald Lawn and Landscape.  When not coaching and helping young players learn the game and develop their skills, Coach Brown enjoys spending time with his wife Brooke.
