Warhawks Win 2003 Northern Region
Championship!

Saturday May 31, 2003 at Fairfax High School.
The
Madison Warhawks came from behind twice to defeat Robinson and win their
second consecutive Northern Region Championship. The game was full
of exciting defensive plays and key hits. Center fielder Andrew
Baird threw out a runner, catcher Matt Foley threw out two runners and
right fielder Mark Riffee made two spectacular diving catches to end
innings and the ball game. Chris Wimmer and First Baseman
Adam Bechtold made several key defensive plays. The Warhawks offense was
paced by Adam Bechtold who was 3 for 3 with two doubles. Johnny Ayers
homered early for the Warhawks. Josh Canova had three RBI's on two
hits including a double and Matt Riffee was 2 for 3. Matt Foley's triple
scored Matt Riffee with the winning run and Johnny Ayers with an
insurance run. Nick Tomasetti added a single in the last rally.
Madison's first run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Riffee. Andrew
Baird singled early in the game and also scored a key run.
Sophomore Chris Sterbenz started the game on the mound for Madison and
kept the Warhawks in the game until senior Josh Canova took over in the
fifth inning. Josh Canova was the winning pitcher.
Madison has won back three of its titles and
defeated Hermitage of the Central Region on Tuesday June 3 at Madison in
the State Quarterfinals behind the strong pitching of Josh Canova
and the game winning two- run scoring hit of Matt Riffee. The
Warhawks returned to the State Semifinals in Colonial
Heights. The Warhawks lost to the new State Champions Great Bridge
but showed they have a program that reloads by finishing as one of the
top two teams in the state in 2003 after graduating 11 players from their
2002 State Championship team. The Warhawks will reload again for 2004
and all but one of their returning players played for the Vienna
Mustangs who finished in the top 8 of the National High School
Championship Tournament in Louisville, KY during July,2003.
