STATE FINAL GAME

Madison 2, J.R. Tucker 1

Madison 2 J.R. Tucker 1 There was no need to worry that the prom would deplete the fan base for Madison at the state finals because, other than the prom-goers, it seemed that all of Vienna was there to cheer the Warhawks on to a 2-1 win over Richmond's J.R. Tucker for the State AAA baseball title. The Madison crowd was hoping for a comfortable victory when the Warhawks scored in the first inning as B.T. Good singled and Allen Wimmer drove him in with a double up the middle. A tough Tucker pitcher foiled those plans as he held Madison scoreless through the next 5 innings. Tucker's Chase Farmer tied the game in the 6th with a solo home run to left. The Warhawks held the Tigers in the top of the 7th with a strike out and a double play. For the first time this season, the Warhawks had to bat in the bottom of the 7th. With two outs Andrew Baird reached 1st base on a dropped third strike. Johnny Ayers kept the inning alive with an opposite field single. Joe Lewin then stepped up and smashed the first pitch to the center field fence as Baird raced home for the winning run. The crowd went wild! J.J. Hollenbeck threw a complete game, striking out 5 and allowing only 3 hits. After the award of the State Championship trophy, many photos and much celebration on the field, the Warhawks boarded the bus and headed for the prom. They received a raucous welcome from their fellow students and biggest fans when they arrived at the prom still in their uniforms. It was a magical season, boys. Thanks for the memories!

STATE SEMI-FINAL

Madison 5, Mills Godwin 2

On a chilly afternoon in the beautiful Shephard Stadium in Colonial Heights, Madison beat Mills Godwin, the perennial powerhouse from Richmond, 5-2 to advance to the State finals. The Warhawks got on the board first in the 2nd as Andrew Baird singled, advanced on an Ayers sacrifice bunt and scored on a Joe Lewin single. Madison's infield played tough, turning double plays in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th innings to hold Mills Godwin scoreless. In the top of the 5th, the Eagles managed to score 2 unearned runs, and led 2-1going into the 6th inning. The Warhawks got going immediately in the bottom of the 6th as leadoff Hollenbeck walked, Baird drove in courtesy runner Mackenzie with a double, Ayers singled and knocked Baird in and then scored on a wild pitch. Good singled, then Foley singled to drive in Good for the fourth run of the inning. The fans were hoping for more as Wimmer singled and Orsinger walked but the inning ended on a deep Hollenbeck ball to left that held promise. The infield turned one more double play in the 7th, and with a ground ball to B.T. for the 3rd out, Madison was on its way to the finals. Patrick Brown pitched a complete game, allowing only 3 hits and inducing 12 ground balls against a hot hitting team. (Mills Godwin's run production during its season was almost as high as Madison's.) Foley and Wimmer were both 3 for 3 and Baird was 2 for 3 with 1 rbi. Many students and other fans made the trip to Colonial Heights and the support was teriffic.

STATE QUARTERFINAL

Madison 7, Hickory 6

PHEWW!! For the first time this season Madison trailed late in the game, but fought back to beat Hickory 7-6. Hickory jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Madison tied it up in the 3rd when the first batter Joe Lewin singled, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a B.T. Good ground out and raced home on a sac fly by Haden. The Warhawks had a big fourth inning. Orsinger walked, Hollenbeck singled (Mackenzie--courtesy runner), both advanced as Baird put the ball in play on the ground and Gabe scored as Ayers made good contact.. With 2 outs, Lewin got on with a fielding error, scoring Mackenzie, then Good smashed a double into the corner of right field, scoring Lewin. Foley drove in Good with a single up the middle. The comfort of a 5-1 lead didn't last long as Hickory scored 2 in the 5th. In the top of the 6th, with 2 outs, two Hickory runners reached on miscues and a home run by Justin Upton added 3 for a 6-5 Hickory lead. The Warhawks got down to business in the bottom of the 6th. With one out, Good singled then stole 2nd. Foley stepped up with 2 outs and smashed a triple to deep center field, scoring B.T. Wimmer knocked in Tyler Garner (running for Foley) for the go ahead run. Hickory's first two guys reached with singles in the 7th and advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a sacrifice bunt. With the 2000 plus Madison fans in attendance worked up to a fevered pitch, a determined Hollenbeck, who pitched a complete game, struck out the next two batters to clinch the win. On to Colonial Heights. . .--Terry Brown

Regional FINALS

Madison 11 Centreville 3

A huge crowd turned out to watch Madison claim the Northern Region title by beating Centreville 11-3. B.T. Good set the tone for the evening with a leadoff double. Matt Foley sent one deep over the left field fence for the early Madison 2-0 lead. Centreville came back to score in the 3rd and 4th, tying the game. The Warhawks exploded in the bottom of the 4th. Hollenbeck was hit by a pitch, Baird smashed a line drive single to center, and Ayers walked to load the bases. Joe Lewin then hit a double to the top of the center field fence, driving in two. Good followed with a duplicate double, also plating two. Haden and Foley got on with a pair of Wildcat errors and another run scored. Mackenzie (running for Foley) got into a rundown, allowing Haden to score. The Warhawks scored two more runs in the 5th on another Lewin double, and the final run in the 6th. Good was 3 for 4, Lewin was 2 for 3 and Hollenbeck was 2 for 2 at the bat. Josh Canova got the win and Brown and Moniri combined for 5 strikeouts in the last 3 innings.

Regional Semifinals

Madison 3 Robinson 2

In a hard fought regional semi-final Madison came through to beat a good Robinson team 3 to 2. J.J. Hollenbeck struck out 10 in the complete game victory and drove in the winning run. The Rams scored first in the top of the 3rd on three consecutive hits. The Warhawks answered in the bottom of the inning when, with 2 outs, Good, Haden and Foley drew walks to load the bases and Allen Wimmer drove in 2 with a double. Robinson scored again in the 4th, but couldn't advance a runner past 2nd base in the last 3 innings. In the bottom of the 6th, the lead-off Wimmer reached 2nd on a 2-base throwing error. Orsinger advanced Allen to 3rd and J.J. drove him in with a double. Fred Haden made several nice plays in the field.--Terry Brown

Regional Quarter finals

Madison 10, Falls Church 4

The one day rain postponement of the regional quarterfinal game against Falls Church didn't dampen the Warhawks bats, as Madison won 10-4. The Warhawks jumped ahead in the first inning to lead 5-0. The Jaguars fought back to score 4 runs in the top of the third, putting pressure on Madison. The Warhawks responded beautifully by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, another in the 5th and the 10th run in the 6th. The offense was led by Joe Lewin ( 2/3, double, 3 rbi), Matt Foley (2/3, 2 doubles, 1 rbi), Gabe Orsinger (2/3, triple), J.J. Hollenbeck (single, 2 rbi) and Johnny Ayers (2/4) who stroked a solo home run to right. Baird and Good also contributed hits. The defense turned a double play and Good made two great defensive plays to rob Jaguar hits. Patrick Brown got the win for 6 innings of work and Kevan Moniri closed out the 7th with 2 strikeouts.--Terry Brown

Regional Game #1

May 20, 2002

Madison 6, South Lakes 1

It was a total team effort in front of a huge home crowd as the Warhawks beat South Lakes 6-1 in the first round of the regional tournament. The first run of the game was scored by B.T. Good (2 hits) who got on with a single to right, went to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt and savvy base-running ploy by Haden (1 hit) and came home on a sac fly by Foley. Foley later ripped 2 doubles and drove in 3 more runs. Hollenbeck came through with a clutch hit and drove in 2 runs as he battled with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the bottom of the 3rd. Wimmer contributed a single and was shown respect as he was intentionally walked and scored on the Hollenbeck hit. Hollenbeck kept his pitch count low as he struck out 6 and held South Lakes to no earned runs. Josh Canova entered in the 7th to notch 2 more strikeouts and hold the Seahawks.

Liberty District Finals

Madison vs. Lee (3-1)

Good scored the first run in the first inning after he walked, stole 2nd and raced home on a throwing error. Allen Wimmer drove in David Mackenzie (running for Foley) with a double to left center for the second Warhawk run. In the 2nd inning, Johnny Ayers reached base on an error, stole 2nd and scored on a throwing error.
